Excellent school, conscientious principal Mr. O, wonderful teachers. Have 2 children who did K, Grade 1, 2, and 3. Always was in Montessori schools in and out of state, but this school is the best.

Heartherwood is a great school. We open enrolled our child and he loves the school. Teachers are very caring and parens are very involved.

My Child attended this School. The Principal has no leadership skills. Unable to deal with any conflict. Parents run the School and are wonderful. Teacher moral is low with a lame leader. Had some Great teachers, also some very unmotivated ones. My advice look at open enrollment, Private School.

parent involvement is high...teachers are getting lazy in upper pod...worried about kids experience when they go to Middle school

Because both the teachers and the parents are highly caring and involved. Everyone gives extra time for the kids and it shows.

I love the community focus. Heatherwood has great academics, don't get me wrong, but our neighborhood is kind of out in the middle of nowhere and Heatherwood Elementary has also become a social focus of the neighborhood. They have fun runs, movie nights, bingo nights, and all sorts of activities for families.

Every single teacher my 5th grader has had there has helped him grow in a different way. It's just a wonderful, supportive community.

Heatherwood is a truly caring community of educators, parents and community members. It is wonderful to see my children get up every morning and WANT to go to school. The school is very open and a truly friendly place.

Heatherwood is a very green school, and are teaching our children how to be green by example and by practice. In addition to great academics, Heatherwood's wonderful educators teach and promote tolerance for others, good life skills, and help our kids to look at how they can contribute to their community. It's a great place for children to grow into solid, contributing members of society, and they have a lot of fun along the way!

Great Environment for children to start their education

Heatherwood is a great community school. The teachers and staff are wonderful and really care about the children. My child wakes up every morning happy and excited to go to school, which I feel is a true testament to the wonderful job the teachers are doing. They have open classrooms and it amazes me how focused the children are despite not having walls. The children learn in fun and interesting ways and my daughter is constantly talking about what she learned each day.

This school has such a great sense of community where many families know and support each other. This school actively support many activities such as 'Walk and Roll' where students with families, teachers, etc get physical exercise while getting to/from school. The cafeteria has healthy food choices. The principle is a kind/caring individual who actively is involved with the well being of all students/faculty. This school has proven that it enabled students to be prepared for middle school and beyond.

Heatherwood Elementary School is a wonderful school for many reasons. The dedicated staff is caring, compassionate, willing and extremely competent. There are programs available to encourage learning outside the classroom like 'mathletes', the learning fair and the science fair. Also, there are plenty of volunteer projects and community service opportunities for students to learn the importance of giving back. We are a 'green' school and allow many choices to help continue this by recycling, cutting down on paper usage and 'walk and roll' week, where students are encouraged to find alternative ways to get to and from school. The best thing about our school is that the parents are very involved and it feels like a community. It is a terrific school and we are thankful our children are lucky enough to attend.

It is a wonderfully warm and positive approach to learning and has been since my daughters attended there in the 1980's. We love the way students are treated there and the high quality of education received.

Heatherwood is a family friendly school with strong parent involvement and a great sense of community. Our family lives in a rural setting, so it is especially important that my children feel part of a community at school.

Heather wood Elementary is a great school with an outstanding community. Both teachers and parents do their very best to make sure the children have a great experience at school. The school always get high scores on the national tests. Our open enrollment is up due to all of these reasons, and everyone speaks very warmly about the school. We are proud to be part of the Heather wood family.

I feel this school is so family oriented and really WANTS parent participation. One always feels welcome there.

Heatherwood's principal, teachers, para-educators and staff are the best any parent and child can ask for. Compared to schools that I have been involved with in the past, there was always someone telling you which teacher you should hope to get or to hope you don't get. In Heatherwood, any teacher you get, you know they are going to be a wonderful and caring teacher and that your child is going get a great education. They are very dedicated to our children and it's an awesome community that I'm proud to be a part of.

I love this school because the teachers are excellent. I cannot complain about one teacher my children have ever had. Also, the school does tons of fun activities to get families involved.

Our son attended Heatherwood not so very long ago in the scheme of things. Now in college, his love of learning and respect for academia emphasized at Heatherwood, remains. The teachers were engaged, caring and most importantly provided a base of loving to learn that will last his lifetime.

This is an absolutely awesome school. The sense of community is great. The school is right in the center of an older community, and many of the families live here, walk their kids to school, talk, hang out, have playgroups and get-togethers. It is a great place to live and learn. The teachers are so friendly and know all of the kids by name. The school has open class rooms, it recycles, has recently changed their lunch menu to a much healthier alternative (with salad bar). I can't say enough good things about Heatherwood Elementary. Our kids just love it, and so do we!

Heatherwood Elementary is a great school. The teachers and staff are dedicated to teaching the children. The parents offer tremendous support. There are extra activities coordinated by the PTO for both academic and social events.

HW has worked hard at making the school a true community school, where kids and parents work toward making the school great. The teachers/staff/principal are wonderful, caring people, and my kids just love to go to school. The school is also a ecocycle Green Star school, a recipient of SRTS grant funding to encourage kids to ride/walk to school, and offers great after school activities for kids, including intramurals and HW University.

We have an incredible community of families, teachers and admin that put children first. Everyone goes the extra step to make sure that all kids have a nurturing, safe, and challenging enviroment to learn and grow. Our school educates all aspects of a child... the emotional, social, athletic, artistic, musical and intellectual. Our principal is very involved in the daily goings on of the school and knows every child by name. We have many social events for families throughout the year. It is a very close knit community of friends and family. My children love going to school and at the end of the day that is what is important.

Long term retention of faculty and principal, intramural program, full gymnastics PE program, community service program at local food bank, bike and walk to school, character development program and recognition, active PTO with community building events, active Girl and Cub Scout program in every grade, after school music program, one mile fun run 'Heather Heatherwood' modeled after the 10K Bolder Boulder; after school affordable programs on-site through Heatherwood University, very high percentage of parental involvement and volunteering, amazing principal- I went to see him once and he was handing out milks to the kindergartners in the lunch line

Great teachers, great administration, great parent community all supporting the education of our children

The sense of community at our school is amazing!People get along and support each other. Our faculty really care about the students and their families. Our parents really care about the teachers. I have 2 kids who are in (have been in Heatherwood) my oldest just moved to middle school this year and I can't say enough about our school. We had the opportunity to go to private and charter schools and we chose Heatherwood because of the outstanding academic opportunities, the good balance of art/music & athletics that are still so important at our school! Bonus, it's our neighhood public school! Win/win in our book! As well as being a distinguised school academically, our kids are taugh to give back and care for our environment. We have many community service activities and we are one of a handful of Green Star schools, partnering with Eco-Cycle to build a model Zero Waste community at our school. Great kids are coming out of this school!

Heatherwood has provided exactly the right type of education for my kids. They receive individual attention when they need it, feel pride in their school and schoolmates, they learn respect for themselves and others. I notice the commitment of teachers, parents and administration working in partnership to create a great experience for kids. The focus and priorities are connected to the community. They use technology appropriately and give kids the opportunity to excel. I trust they would use the funds awarded to make Heatherwood even better.

I love the sense of community that comes with attending Heatherwood, we are able to walk to school and pass many children and parents along the way. My child is in 4th grade and I have loved each and every one of her teachers, they are supportive and have a genuine concern for each and every student to succeed; the music program is also top notch. Quality Education, Quality School!

Heatherwood has been a good school for both our children. We have a child with special needs and is best attending half time. The principal at Heatherwood is making that happen, even though it is a rare set up in our district. The teachers are excellent and we are happy!

I have nothing but good things to say about this school... My son who has Autism, has progressed so well over the last 4-5 years. His improved quality of life and happiness is a testament to to the faculty & staff @ Heatherwood.

this school had the opportunity to become truly Great when Horizons teachers spent hours endeavoring to train them as William Glasser, Alfie Kohn and Gardener would teach. Alas, they did not implement the suggestions and they remain an ordinary, 'good' elementary school. I personally would not choose this school for my child- there is too much emphasis on rewards/punishments, lack of parent involvement and a lack of student self-governance.

My son entered kindergarten at Heatherwood mid year. He was doing fairly well at his previous school, but his new teacher told me he didn't know any of his basics. They were saying he had a possible cognitive problem or ADD. I actually started to believe them. I took him to Sylvian Learning Center. Three weeks after being at Sylvian he could read, do math and knew all of his letters and numbers. I pulled him out of Heatherwood to homeschool, it has been about seven weeks and now he reads at above a first grade level. I found out other kids were bullying him and nothing was being done to stop it, no wonder he couldn't concentrate. I am disgusted with this school, and especially his pm kindergarten teacher. I would not recomend this school to anyone.

Excellent school. Asks a ton from it's parents, though. Not your typical volunteer situation.

I am not a parent, I am a former student. My name is Kristin. I went to Heatherwood about 7 years ago. I am now a freshman in college. Heatherwood is an open space elementary school. A lot of people think that this hinders childrens learning, but it actually helped me. I was able to learn how to focus really well because I had to block out sounds around me and focus on what I was doing. Also, later on I wasn't distracted if someone came into the classroom or I heard noise out in the hall. Once again I was able to block out sounds around me. The teachers were also really attentative and cared about the students. They taught many different methods and were open to suggestions from kids. They also forced you to work hard and gave you a fair amount of homework. If students were having trouble with reading the teacher would help you privately or they would set you up with a school certified tutor. They also corrected grammar and spelling mistakes that students made in class. If the student made a mistake the teacher would address it in front of the whole class, so that the whole class would learn from the mistake. Heatherwood is a great school and I am so thankful that my parents sent me there. The teachers would also help with spelling.
